“Bulgarian Folk Songs”, also called “The Miladinov Brothers’ Collection” by Dimitar and Konstantin Miladinov, is a landmark 19th-century collection of over 600 traditional folk songs gathered from across Macedonia and neighboring regions. From the Macedonian perspective, the book is regarded as one of the foundational works of Macedonian cultural heritage, preserving the oral traditions, poetic language, and identity of the Macedonian people during the Ottoman period.
The brothers traveled extensively through towns and villages, recording love songs, epic ballads, ritual verses, and historical narratives, capturing the authentic speech, customs, and worldview of the local population. For Macedonian cultural history, the collection is treasured as an ethnographic and linguistic treasure, reflecting a distinct regional character and preserving expressions that link the people to their medieval and even ancient past.
Beyond its literary value, the book holds a symbolic place in the Macedonian national awakening, representing a conscious effort to document and elevate the cultural identity of the Slavic population of Macedonia. It is seen not only as a compilation of folklore but also as an act of cultural preservation and affirmation in an era when national identities in the Balkans were under intense political and ideological pressures.
