Abecedar was a primer published in 1925 intended to teach the Macedonian language to children in Greek-controlled parts of Macedonia. It was one of the first educational attempts to recognize and codify the Macedonian language in a formal way, focusing on the Cyrillic alphabet and basic literacy skills.
The book reflects the complex political and cultural tensions in the region, as it aimed to address the linguistic needs of the Slavic-speaking population while navigating pressures from Greek national policies that sought to assimilate minorities.
Though short-lived and controversial, Abecedar remains a significant early document in the history of the Macedonian language and identity, representing an important step toward linguistic and cultural recognition.
