About the Life and Situation of the Bulgarians in the Ottoman Vilayets (Из живота и положението на българите във вилаетите) is a vivid travelogue and sociological study by Atanas Shopov, based on his investigative journeys through Ottoman-ruled regions inhabited by Bulgarians, undertaken in 1887 and 1891. The book was originally published in 1893 in Plovdiv, spanning over 380 pages, and reflects Shopov’s commitment to documenting firsthand the conditions of Bulgarians living outside the newly liberated Bulgarian state.
Shopov's work presents a direct, patriotic reportage, written without artifice or ideological distortion. Traveling with notebook in hand, he describes the daily lives, struggles, and the social and economic hardships faced by the Bulgarian communities in the Ottoman vilayets. The narrative is reported to have “documentary force, unaffectedness and objective popular-psychological insight,” lending it both historical and ethnographic importance.
This work has since been recognized as part of Bulgaria's “rescued history” series, serving as a cultural and historical testament to the perseverance of Bulgarian identity under Ottoman rule. Shopov’s blend of on-the-ground observation and patriotic clarity transformed the book into a valuable window into the lived experience of Bulgarian communities in the late 19th century Ottoman Empire, preserving their voice and condition for future generations.
