Long Journey Home (Долго патување дома) by Vesna Kožinkova is a scholarly yet deeply human exploration of the Aegean Macedonian exile experience. Rooted in her doctoral research, the book examines how Macedonian prose captures the stories of families displaced during and after the Greek Civil War, when thousands of Macedonians were expelled from their ancestral homes. Through a close reading of literature, Kožinkova uncovers the recurring motifs of loss, longing, and survival that define the memory of exile.
The narrative is structured around the idea of “home” as both a physical place and a psychological construct. By tracing characters’ journeys in prose works, the author shows how literature becomes a mirror of collective trauma: the broken bonds with native soil, the struggle to preserve identity in diaspora, and the dream of return. In this sense, the “long journey home” is not only geographical but also emotional and symbolic, capturing the essence of cultural displacement.
At its heart, the book is both a critical study and a tribute, it situates Macedonian exile literature within broader European discourses of memory and identity, while also honoring the lived experiences behind the texts. Kožinkova emphasizes that the persistence of these stories in literature helps sustain national consciousness, cultural resilience, and the hope of homecoming. Thus, Long Journey Home stands as an important contribution to Macedonian literary studies and to the understanding of exile and belonging in the modern age.
