The book Ottoman Monuments in Macedonia (Отоманските споменици во Македонија), published by the Agency for Promotion and Support of Tourism of Macedonia, serves as a richly illustrated guide to the Ottoman cultural and architectural heritage across different regions of Macedonia.
It explores the legacy of nearly five centuries of Ottoman presence (14th–20th century), highlighting how Ottoman culture influenced local society, language, urban planning, and everyday life. The main focus is on Islamic architecture - mosques, hammams, caravanserais, clock towers, bezistens (covered bazaars), turbes (mausoleums), and bridges, that still define the character of many Macedonian towns.
Through descriptions of sites in Skopje, Tetovo, Ohrid, Bitola, Struga, Prilep, Kumanovo, and other regions, the book presents monumental structures like the Stone Bridge of Skopje, Mustafa Pasha Mosque, Colorful Mosque (Šarena Džamija) in Tetovo, and Daut Pasha Hammam. These monuments are shown not only as architectural achievements but also as symbols of the fusion of Byzantine, Oriental, and local Macedonian traditions.
The book emphasizes that many of these sites are living monuments, still functioning as places of worship, cultural centers, or integrated into modern urban life, making them an essential part of Macedonia’s multicultural identity and heritage tourism.
