The Linguistic Atlas of Macedonian Dialects (2020), published by the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU), presents a systematic overview of Macedonian dialectal vocabulary based on data from the Common Slavic Linguistic Atlas (OLA). OLA is a major international project involving all Slavic countries, designed to study Slavic languages and dialects using a unified methodology and transcription system.
The Macedonian atlas includes 50 selected lexical maps representing dialectal material from 24 Macedonian-speaking locations across North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece. The maps cover everyday vocabulary from areas such as the animal world, agriculture, plant life, professions, and the human body.
Each map is accompanied by explanations of meaning, geographic distribution, and etymology, allowing comparisons with other Slavic languages. Unlike the original OLA volumes, this atlas presents full Macedonian dialect forms in Cyrillic, making the material more accessible.
The atlas highlights the richness, diversity, and continuity of Macedonian dialects and clearly situates them within the broader Slavic linguistic space, serving both scholarly research and wider cultural understanding.
The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) is the highest national institution in the fields of science and the arts in Macedonia, headquartered in Skopje. It was established in 1967 by decision of the authorities, with the mission to promote, support, and advance the development of sciences and arts.
MANU coordinates and supports scientific research and artistic activity, contributes to the advancement of scholarly thought and cultural life, and plays an important role in the preservation, study, and promotion of Macedonian cultural, linguistic, and historical heritage. The Academy also maintains an extensive publishing program and carries out numerous research projects, studies, and long-term initiatives.
