Nikola Karev by Orde Ivanovski is a biographical study of one of the central figures of the Ilinden period of the Macedonian revolutionary movement. Born in 1877 in Kruševo, Karev grew up in poverty, left school early, and went to Bulgaria for work, where he became involved with Macedonian socialist circles that shaped his political outlook. After returning to Macedonia, he worked to spread socialist ideas and national awareness among the population, viewing national liberation as inseparable from social justice.
Particular attention is given to his role within the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, where he was among the first to integrate socialist thought into its activity. The book emphasizes his leadership during the Ilinden Uprising, especially as organizer and head of the Kruševo Republic. Karev advocated a democratic platform that called for freedom and equal rights for all communities in Macedonia.
The study situates Karev within the broader framework of the Macedonian revolutionary struggle at the beginning of the twentieth century. It examines his ideological development, political engagement, and role in the events of 1903, presenting him as part of a generation that connected social reform with the demand for national autonomy. As a historiographical work, the book contributes to the understanding of early Macedonian socialist currents and their place in the Ilinden movement.
